thanks, mom.

Thanksgiving is tomorrow, but you wouldn’t know it.  Obviously, people in Vietnam do not celebrate a distinctly American holiday, so for most people, it’s just a normal day.  I am teaching about Thanksgiving in my classes today and tomorrow, and it is actually a lot of fun.  We are going to learn about the Macy’s Parade, the Presidential Turkey Pardon, and, of course, traditional foods.  I am really excited about the turkey pardon, because I think its really ridiculous (I’m using a video of Obama from youtube that really highlights the absurdity).

Since this post is about thanksgiving, here is something I am thankful for.  In lieu of a package, my mom gave me money to buy some treats from home.  I went  to three four different stores to get the following:

Amaretto Coffee Creamer: $5.50*; Brown Sugar: $3.00; Olive Oil: $6.00; Black Beans: $3.00; Organic Peanut Butter: $4.00; Oatmeal Packets (not pictured): $4.00; Unsalted New Zealand Butter: $3.00; Ginger Cookies (not pictured, because I ate them already and they were AMAZING): $.50

Total: approx. $29

*I am slightly appaled that I bought this, but then when I used it in my coffee this morning, I felt totally justified.  It was the best cup of coffee I’ve had in months :)

These are things that you’d probably find in some form in my fridge and pantry at home…but here they are rare treats that I try to savor as long as possible!  It was a well-timed gift that I am really grateful for:)
